On Saturday 2nd of March Bangor’s Dodge Ball team embarked on an epic adventure. Their first competition, Dodge Smash, was held in Birmingham. No one was keen on a 6 o’clock start so blankets and pillows were essential supplies until they reached Birmingham. Great work from the 5 Rugby League lads representing Bangor in the North vs South game winning 24-12, with Corie Shorrock and Dafydd Jones both crossing the line to score! Hopefully all 5 get picked for the Welsh Student squad. The North beat the South 24-12 in a tough Student Rugby League encounter in Monmouth on Sunday where the conditions had a big effect on the outcome of the game. The weekend (16-17th Feb 2019) the Bangor Karate Union (BKU) sent a squad of 7 to the BUCS National Karate championships. This would be the clubs third year competing at BUCS and for all but one member this was there first time at the event. Kata was the main event on Saturday. On the weekend of the 15th-17th February, Bangor University Swimming Club sent a team of 17 swimmers over to Ponds Forge in Sheffield for the National Long Course Championships. The competition is of the highest calibre where the best swimmers across the country compete to achieve the fastest times possible, even including an appearance from Adam Peaty! Bangor University Women’s Basketball team ended their BUCS season with a historic victory. Their win over the University of Central Lancashire concluded an undefeated season, a feat never before achieved by the club. Women’s Basketball have completely dominated the BUCS Northern 2A league with wins against teams such as Liverpool, Lancaster and Liverpool John Moores, earning a well-deserved promotion to league 1A next season. The squash ladies took on Manchester Met 1st team in the Northern Cup match, and first up was Lizzie Crooks. Coming into her match with all guns blazing, she played a brilliant set of games (the best so far)! Undeb Bangor’s Surf team has recently committed to becoming single-use plastic free, and encourages other Clubs and Societies to follow suit. Members of the Surf team are also taking part in ‘2 Minute Beach Cleans’. These will be occurring on a regular basis, before the team takes to the waves. Sailing went to the Sheffield BUSA event (British Universities Sailing Association) friday 26th – sunday 28th oct and they came 1st out of 14 teams. Fantastic weekend of racing at the Sheffield shuffle. Sailing started off with very mixed conditions on the Saturday and a strong win rate of 9 out of 11 races won. Dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge! That’s what 48 clubs from across the Athletic Union did on Saturday 8th November- playing dodgeball in order to raise money for charity! Over 240 students participated in the event that took place in Canolfan Brailsford throughout the afternoon. All teams played four matches during the group stages, accumulating points for winning and an extra point for eliminating the opposition. The team with the most points then proceeded to the next round, but not before some heated play-offs between the teams that were tied for points!
