Alsacian Mulled Wine – A little bit of Christmas from abroad I picked this up whilst working abroad; I prefer this to the English equivalent because it’s fruitier, sweeter and generally just tastes like nice, hot, alcoholic fruit juice. Ingredients (for 6-8 people): 1.5 litres of red wine (2 75cl bottles) – 250g brown sugar –  1 unwaxed lemon –  2 unwaxed oranges (If you can’t find unwaxed oranges and lemons, buy waxed and give them a good scrub with a scourer.) – 2 cinnamon sticks – 2 star anise – 2 cloves -1 pinch of grated nutmeg Method: 1.   …

Channel 4 on Demand offers a reward for their viewers. If you sign up (handing over your name, email and postcode), you can now watch the next episode of Fresh Meat a week before it’s aired. The end of Season 2 finished with quite a bang leaving our characters going their different ways. Vod and Oregon left to travel through South Africa over the summer. Josie was kicked off her course at Manchester, but found a place at the bottom of the country in Southampton, leaving Kingsley caught between two girls. Season 3 picks up at the beginning…

Ever since the influx of new cast members, online forums have insisted that Glee was going downhill fast.  It now seems that the series will finally draw to a close at the end of series 6, with director and show-runner Ryan Murphy announcing the news on the 16th of this month. He also revealed he had planned the last season around Finn and Rachel’s storyline, with the whole show ending with them. The sudden death of leading man Cory Monteith back in July means he has to rethink the series: “I knew what the last shot was — he was in…

I have always been interested in the Brontë sisters since I knew that the original school that they attended, at Cowan Bridge, is only a twenty minute drive from where I live. However, much local talk and histories has revealed the link between the Brontë sisters, and my home in the Dales, is stronger than I once thought.  It appears that a local slave was inspiration for Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights, and worked only five minutes away down the valley. The author, Emily Brontë, described Heathcliff’s skin colour “as dark as though it came from the Devil”. Until now, this…

If you’re reading this I’m going to assume that you’re on American time, because it seems in the UK the only realistic way you can watch Glee is online.  As Graduation rapidly approaches, Gleeks start to prepare to say farewell to key characters that have been there from day one.  Can you imagine Glee without Kurt, Finn, Rachel or Santana?  Would you watch Glee without independent Quinn, or diva Mercedes? Or are you actually tired of Finchel and want something fresh? The mid season finale, left us witnessing Quinn in what looked like a fatal car crash.  The series’ writers…

Hit the Road Jack is Jack Whitehall’s attempt to move his career forward to T.V. personality from “that posh one”, who appears on panel shows such Mock the Week or 8 out of 10 Cats. Other stand up comedians have had their own programmes such as Kevin Bridges’ What’s the Story? Or John Bishop’s John Bishop’s Great Britain. Does Jack match the standard of these household names?  Well, he certainly has a good go at it. Jack Whitewall entered the comedy circuit wowing audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, following this up with appearances on panel shows alongside well established…

In the 90’s we had the best television. Its official, if you pick a T.V guide now the amount television for Kids on BBC or ITV has declined.  All their shows have been pushed over to the satellite channels exclusively for kids like CBBC or CBeebies.  In 2004, ITV stopped commissioning kids T.V altogether, after a well meaning Jamie Oliver, started his campaign to improve school dinners.  He went to Downing Street and the government gave their support.  Under public pressure, the broadcasting regulator, Ofcom banned all junk food advertising in the children’s T.V schedule.  This has drastic effects, it…

This year will see a feminist surge of films where girls finally take the main role. We have had role models such as Hermione Granger, but the story was all about Harry. The only films in the past few years, that have been centred around women are – dare I say it – Twilight and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, even then Lisbeth was helping Mikael, it was how he was ultimately going to solve the case.  In the next few months we’ll see films with a heroine that saves herself, and in most cases, others too.  2012 will…
