At this time of year there is nothing better to get you into the festive spirit than a trip to the Christmas markets! Naturally not many of us can just jet off to Germany for a day out so the next best thing are the markets here in Britain. Read on to see what we thought of the Christmas markets… Birmingham Markets by Jordaine Hulse This year was the first time that I had ever been to visit a Christmas market here in England and I have to say that I was definitely not disappointed with what I saw!…

by Harriet WellerA city which frequents the television with images of glowing lights, ‘friends’ drinking endless cups of coffee and bright yellow cabs finally became a reality for me at the age of 16. An unexpected but marvellous reality when my sister surprised me with the trip for Christmas! If you are looking for spectacular gift ideas New York is a sure winner. Our 3 day trip was a whirlwind from start to finish as we were keen to cram everything in. We were instantly thrust into the city life, as we emerged off the subway and were met with the…

It’s not often that a design student’s university work gets put straight into market, but 23 year-old student Kieron-Scott Woodhouse from Middlesex University has managed it. He originally designing a concept phone out of steel and bronze which was picked up by a website that specialised in concept phones. After spreading from blog to blog, Woodhouse was approached by a technology entrepreneur who liked the idea and together they formed a company to develop the concept further. The phone was named ADzero and after working on the design for a while, it was modified to have a uni-body bamboo case.…

August 1999. You’d always know a bank holiday weekend getaway had begun, when the first few raindrops had started streaking across the car windscreen. Twenty minutes later, and we’d grind to a halt behind an eight mile tailback of cars, caravans, and trailers on the M6. My brother would barely be visible on the seat to my left, buried beneath an avalanche of camping equipment we couldn’t fit in the boot. It was obvious he was still alive though – we’d hear him screaming ‘Dad I need a wee!’ every five minutes. My Mum meanwhile would be staring out of…

I premise this by saying that whilst of course I had an opinion on the situation before I travelled there, the main opinion I had was that I didn’t know enough about the situation for my opinion to be worth squat. After a week there, that hasn’t really changed, but it has certainly refined my thoughts. But still, I am just an outsider, and certainly no expert. Anyway, the week was never supposed to be a trip in ‘solidarity’ with anyone or a fact finding mission – it was a holiday with my friend. So we start at the airport…Why…

This issue of Seren has made it to Lille, North France. Patrick, yep my dad, took Seren with him on a pre Christmas market shopping trip, and loved it there. He was able to practice his French, very rusty I’m sure, but still at least he was giving it go. Lille can be reached by travelling on the Eurostar, from £65 return a cheap way of travelling. But make sure to book in advance as it can get pricey. You can also drive or fly, however these can become very long and pricey journeys. When you are in Lille, if…

Thinking of a budget summer holiday with your mates? Is sun, relaxation high on everyone’s wish list? Yes you could do the predictable thing and go to Malia, Kos, Zante, Ibiza but why not try Tenerife? Booking a holiday on a student budget can be fairly stressful…thankfully nowadays we have plenty of options when it comes to cheap budget holidays, even to places abroad! I love a holiday where I can enjoy the sun, sea and sand whilst also having a bit of an adventure – I found Tenerife the perfect place to do that and the great thing is…

This new category is only for use by intersex people (people who are not biologically entirely male or female). However Transgendered passport-holders, who have changed gender but not had surgery, will have to choose either male or female, but the third gender ‘X’. Previously, travellers were not able to change sex on their passport unless they had had surgery. This is still the case in many countries, although any nation under the International Civil Aviation Organization’s authority is eligible to introduce category ‘X’. In Britain, people do not have to have had an operation to change their passport details, as…

I wanted to do something that lived in my memory for many years to come and I wanted to experience something different and new. I wanted a fresh challenge. There were several ideas going around in my mind but one thing was certain in my mind: I wanted to go travelling. I’ve always wanted to go to South America and go to Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Chile but then  I realised that it would be much easier if I went to Australia first and then travelled elsewhere afterwards. I came up with a route of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji,…

This issue of Seren has made it to… FINLAND…which is 1299 miles away from Bangor! This issue Seren has travelled all the way to Finland! Finland is a Nordic country situated in the Fennoscandian region of north-eastern Europe. It is bordered by Sweden in the west, Norway in the north and Russia in the east. The native languages of Finland are Finnish and Swedish and the capital is Helsinki, where five million of…

Each issue I will be travelling to a place within one hour from Bangor and telling you the places you must visit before you leave this city! This magnificent and uniquely shaped pier stands as a testament to Victorian design and architecture. Situated in the seaside resort of Llandudno, this is definitely something not to be over looked. Taking only thirty minutes to reach on the A55, you have no excuses not to visit. At 2,295 feet (700m) the pier is the longest in Wales and fifth longest in the UK. A British Tourist Authority report in 1975 said of…
