On Tuesday the 28th of February, people up and down the country will have stocked up on chocolate spread, bananas, lemons and sugar for Pancake Day 2017. There are a lot of traditions we follow in the UK. Some more popular than others, but is any more popular among the student population than pancake day. Shrove Tuesday better known as pancake day is an odd tradition because it isn’t the celebration of anything. Shrove Tuesday is all about preparing for life without some of our favourite foods for lent. Firstly, why do we call it Shrove Tuesday? Well Shrove…

This is the 7th year of the competition with Aberystwyth taking their turn to host. Throughout the competition only the home team has taken the converted Varsity trophy. We know the fight is won in training, so we have been preparing to #winaway since day 1 of the academic year to return the trophy to it’s rightful home. We will be traveling down to Aberystwyth as one under our mighty lion #togetherweroar to defeat them on…

Why do we carve pumpkins on Halloween? Traditions are odd aren’t they? Every year on the 31st of October we all dress up like idiots, drink a little too much and buy over 5 million pumpkins just to carve a face in them but do you know why? I did a bit of research to figure out why we decide to slice, dice and scoop poor pumpkins in the name of Halloween every year. Unsurprisingly the story of ‘Jack-o-Lanterns’ is surrounded in folklore and rumour but what we do know is that the name Jack-o-Lantern comes from 17th century Britain where…

It seems almost impossible to have found somebody who hasn’t heard the term or of the concepts of ‘clean eating’ in this day and age, with numerous bloggers and supposed ‘health’ speakers encouraging the labelling of particular foods as either ‘clean’ or ‘dirty’. An unrealistic suggestion that only encourages restrictive eating behaviours amongst those who fall into the clasp of the trend. But what does this have to do with Orthorexia? First described in 1997 by Dr. Steven Bratman, Orthorexia is deemed a ‘fixation of righteous eating’, though it currently has not received a formal medical diagnosis, it has become…
Am I the only person who usually forgets to drink enough water? Even when I was trying really hard, preparing litre bottles each morning to try and drink more I would just… not drink it. If only there was an app for that – and there is! Plant Nanny is an app that encourages you to drink water by providing you with an adorable virtual plant to look after. Each cup of water you drink helps your plant baby stay healthy and grow into adulthood. You then get to keep your adult plants ‘outside’ where they happily give you seeds…

Photos by Joe Heaford & Jez Harvey Last year saw a hard fought victory for Bangor University’s Athletic club as they managed to see off Aberystwyth with an overall score of 138-115. Athletics was one of the first events to kick off this year, once again taking place on and around the Athletics track on Treborth, and Bangor’s athletes knew they had a hard task ahead of them to turn all of their events into that vital point on the Varsity scoreboard. Despite the long day ahead of them, spirits were high in the team as they all cheered each…
After a long day of playing and drawing at primary school, I enjoyed nothing more than relaxing in front of an episode of The Amanda Show when I got home. I used to laugh out loud as I watched sketches of ‘Hill Billy Moments’ and Judge Judy, who’s Dancing Lobsters I always joined in with. My obsession with the show meant I could easily relate with Penelope, Amanda’s number one fan who created ‘amandaplease.com’, and I would proudly use the catchphrase ‘not a problem’ every time I fell over. I must admit that Totally Kyle, who had long blond hair, wore tie…
Many fans were left worried when it was publicised that singer Ellie Goulding was going to be quitting the music business. However, Ellie’s fans shouldn’t panic because the lady herself has taken to twitter to clear up the matter. She has stated that she isn’t quitting, just taking a long overdue break from music. She tweeted: “I am not quitting music; I’ve come too far for that! Just having a break. It’s been seven years since I had time off… love you all”. The Herefordshire born singer has had a busy career so far. In between her endless recording sessions…
With the raft of cuts the Police forces of England and Wales have had to endure, they have had to look at ways of working smarter to be able to still deliver the service the public expect. One of the ways the forces have done this is to look at technology to assist in the officers jobs easier. One of the answers has been to replace the simple pocket notebook with a smart phone. Some of you may ask why, but the phone has many uses as well as being able to record notes from incidents. The phones have now…
