Initially I couldn’t help but feel sceptical about Channel 4’s new TV show The Mimic; the adverts looked good but it wasn’t getting as much advertising time as that god awful abomination that they broadcast called Gogglebox. The basis of Mimic sounds quite obvious as well; it’s a TV show that follows the life of Martin Hurdle (played by Terry Mynott), a middle aged man with an unimpressive life who is capable of replicating the voices of the nation’s much loved celebrity treasures. These voices thus lead Martin into a cohort of shenanigans which turns his seemingly menial life interesting.…

A local dog walker has thanked the quick thinking of a Bangor security guard for saving his life following a heart attack he suffered whilst walking across the Bangor University football fields. Trevor Roberts, 67, was spotted by security guard Robbie Williams when he collapsed on the football field, before he received vital, emergency first aid prior to the arrival of the paramedics. Mr Roberts was then taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd. As he recovered Roberts, a father of four, and grandfather or nine, said that he was “not feeling too bad. I’m very grateful to the lads for saving my…
Bangor University Women’s Rugby Club has always taken part in fundraising events throughout the season to raise funds for small charities which mean something to someone in the club. Previously, this has taken the form of selling shots, raffles and bag-packing. This year, we decided to do something different, and so I present to you: A Mile of Pennies! A mile of pennies (when laid side-to-side) equates to £844.80, and this we be split equally between three charities: Riding for the Disabled Association, Anglesey and Treborth branches, aiding the physical and mental development of disabled children and adults through horse…
Bangor University Table Tennis club have completed their Bucs league matches for the season. The team has also competed at Varsity and the Bucs individual’s tournament. Due to UCLAN’s failure to field a team, Bangor 1st’s picked up the win which sent them above UCLAN and into 3rd place in the Northern 2A division. Club captain and ever present player Andrew Leach says, “I feel there were highs and lows to this season. Every player has improved throughout the campaign and have shone as individuals, however it was team effort that helped us achieve some fantastic results. “At the end…
For the third year running February became FeBRAry and once again the Lacrosse Club stepped up to play their part in raising lots of money for Breast Cancer Care… We were all very proud of a member of our women’s team, Kara Wills, who was brave enough to make a sky-dive back in 2012. Thanks to her determined fundraising, she was able to kick-start our club efforts with an amazing contribution of £260! This fantastic achievement motivated the whole club to get involved in our FeBRAry cake sale. We are very grateful to all those who bought, baked and donated…
On Saturday 2nd March, members of Bangor University Trampoline staged a 12 hour Bounce-a-thon in Maes Glas hall. The most dedicated members had already spent 3 hours the previous day doing a normal session. The hope was to help the club gather some funding for competitions and the pricey coaching that they require. As well as coaching and captaining the University Trampoline club, Becky is also the coach of local youth Trampoline group, the Bangaroos. Initially the club was just focused around the university, however the extension into the community shows the club’s initiative to promote the sport and share…
Underwater Hockey may be one of the most niche sports Bangor University’s AU has to offer, but don’t let this hidden gem’s lack of mainstream coverage fool you; the sport has a dedicated player base, as will be seen on March 9th when more than a dozen University teams from as far afield as Aberdeen and Plymouth descend on Bangor for this year’s “Octopush” – as the sport is informally known – Student Nationals. For those of you who don’t know (and I’ll be honest, this will be most of you), Underwater Hockey is played with two teams of 5…
Bangor Men’s Football first took the Varsity match in Aberystwyth with a 2-0 victory over the home team. An early goal from Varsity debutant George Townsend created a fairly tense and passionate 40 minutes of football before Bangor doubled the lead. Early on in the game we saw tackles flying in and passions soaring high as both teams wanted to notch up that all important win for their team in the overall standings as well as the bragging rights over their opponents. Whilst the Aber team had a few shocks on the team sheet, no one will be surprised that…
It’s not often an unconventional type of game wins game of the year, but 2012’s Telltale point-and-click Walking Dead isn’t exactly what you’d expect from what has become a globally renowned game. Split into 5 episodes, The Walking Dead is loosely tied in with the popular comic book series. The Walking Dead isn’t quite what you’d expect from most games, especially when you see the title; the game however has most players engrossed in not just the gameplay itself but the story and characterisation. In fact, main character, convict Lee Everett, and his journey are one of the main positives…
In 2009 Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton decided to hang up his gloves. In November this year he decided that he was in line for a comeback fight; something that a lot of boxing fans will say is never a particularly good idea. Nevertheless the Hitman chose Ukranian Vyacheslav Senchenko as his opponent. The bout took place in Manchester’s MEN Arena, Hatton’s home soil, hopefully an advantage. However the Ukranian fighter was just too hard for the Hitman who eventually succumbed to a 9th round knockout which saw him counted out whilst on his knees. It’s an unfortunate end to Ricky…
I do love a good app, and one of the ones that has crept into my repertoire recently is TuneIn. It is the mobile version of a website that I quite frankly never even knew existed. The app (and its website counterpart) let you pick a radio station from a huge list and just “tune in”. But radio is a declining medium right? Wrong. The online radio industry is blossoming – whilst applications on your computer such as Spotify may be able to pluck up some random song from a playlist I never quite think it’s the same. I like…
That’s [not] debatable So it seems that in life I’m an easily annoyed person – and one thing that seems to annoy me – especially this time of year is brand loyalty – well not so much the loyalty but the blinded debates it causes. Amongst technology lovers, the debate between brands and makes is something that seems to annoyingly thrive in the world. Whether it is Android vs Apple, or Xbox vs PS3, it seems we love taking sides – even in celebrity breakups! The thing is that none of these pointless and countless debates ever seem to matter. All…
Every year Christmas seems to rear its head earlier and earlier; which is definitely an odd concept considering it’s a single day. Growing up I’ve become used to certain traditions, the Christmas songs can come out on the first of December (and believe me on the 1st the Pogues will be blaring from my laptop), the Christmas decorations go up on the 6th and so forth. It’s also often been said that it’s not Christmas until you’ve seen the Coca Cola advert – which is great, providing the Coca Cola advert comes on at a good time. This year the…
On the 17th November several clubs and societies’ members took to the stage for a special one off dance show for Children in Need. “Strictly Come Bangor” invited society members to don their best dance moves in a competition judged by Emyr Bath, Ash Kierans, and BU Dance Captain Victoria Kirk, culminating in an audience vote for the winning society. The winning society or club would net a massive £50, whilst this may not seem like a huge prize an amount like this could be the difference between an AU club making it to their next match, or a society…
Bangor Ladies Women’s Gaelic Team has kicked off the season with three sensational wins including claiming victory at the annual nine a side tournament in Liverpool. This season welcomed an increasing number of new girls to the sport, with the majority openly proclaiming they had never heard of the sport let alone picked up a Gaelic football. Nonetheless the spirit and determination of the team could not be broken and has gone from strength to strength. A unanimous team effort combined with training twice a week on Ffriddoedd has provided a platform for the team to acquire the essential skills…
It is that time of year again, when we look back on Britain’s sporting achievements over the last 12 months and the public votes for the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year. Last year’s winner was Mark Cavendish, after he won the Green Jersey at the Tour de France and the World road race championships. Obviously, one of the highlights of the year was the London Olympics and Team GB’s success there. The majority of the candidates will therefore be Olympians and Paralympians. However, there have been moments outside the Olympics this year which have been memorable, including Wimbledon, the…
