Great Poles of Fire
Many households in Holyhead experienced a power cut in the early hours of November 29th after thieves set fire to a telegraph pole in an attempt to steal copper cable. in a field near the recently built Cybil Retail Park in Kingsland Road.
It is thought that the fire was started at midnight in a field near the recently built Cybil Retail Park in Kingsland road, and five hours later the power was cut off. Scottish power discovered the damaged telegraph pole and reported the incident to the police.
Holyhead police described the criminal actions as “unbelievable and totally reckless”, especially given that the copper was abandoned due to it being such an insignificant amount. PC Joe Hawken, the officer investigating the incident, said: “This was a totally mindless and dangerous act as thousands of volts of electricity run through these cables and the consequences of this criminality could have been fatal”.
