Professor Iwan Davies announced in February that he will be stepping down from his current position as Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Bangor University before the next academic year. Seren met with him to discuss his term as VC and the next steps for Bangor. The team were welcomed into his office, where he explained the history of the room and the treasures within it, laughing about the dust that has collected over the past 130 years. Before him, many other Vice-Chancellors have worked in this office, although the role may have changed slightly over the years. Professor Davies kindly explained what…

There are seven different routes that you can take up Snowdon: Llanberis, Miner’s, Pyg, Watkin, Rhyd Ddu, Snowdon Ranger and (only for the experienced mountain walker!) Crib Goch. As we live in Bangor, the easiest one to access would be the Llanberis path – you can take the 85 bus outside Ffridd (or from the bus station) and it’ll take you directly into Llanberis – past Pete’s Eats (a favourite haunt of walkers and climbers) and right opposite the train station that can take you up to the summit if you don’t fancy the walk! The bus ride takes about…
We’re always told that we have so much on our doorstep here at Bangor, but sometimes it all seems so far away! So I’ve taken some time to research the different bus routes to get you out and about when you’ve got some free time. There is so much you can do – you just need to know how to get there! To visit the town with the longest name (you know the one I’m on about), you can take the ‘4’ buses from Bangor. When you’re there you can visit the train station, get a picture with the super-long…
October 22nd saw the celebration of Oktoberfest hosted by the Bangor University German Society and Bangor Langsoc. People donned their Lederhosen and Dirndl, got their Bratwurst, drank their beer and headed over to The Belle Vue Pub to celebrate the night. With the grill cooking the Bratwurst and traditional German music playing over the speakers, the atmosphere screamed Bavaria. We had many people show up including German natives, German speakers and people who just like German culture making it a great place to celebrate in style. Our food and cakes were free to eat, with a donation bucket on the…
November 1st is generally full of eating Halloween sweets from the night before, but for many it also marks the celebration of Veganism. World Vegan Day started in 1994, in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Vegan Society, and it marks the beginning of Vegan month. As well as a celebration, it’s also a really good way for people to learn a little bit more about this way of life. It’s a great time to ask what Veganism actually is, and learn to see things from a different perspective. It’s a common misconception that Vegans…
Railcard I did remember to use this the first time, but I thought I’d mention it for the sake of it. I purchased a railcard and it’s honestly such a good deal! I hadn’t thought that I would even use it, but I made the money back within the first two trips. I bought a 1 year one, and had discount on it thanks to my NUS card (another staple I’d recommend!) and instead of paying around £40 per ticket I’ve been paying £20-25! Food Normally I’m pretty good with planning snacks and meals, but I hadn’t planned my food…
