Universities across the UK will be hit with another 14 days of strikes around exam time if the pensions dispute is not resolved. Sixty-five institutions face another wave of strikes as members of the University and College Union (UCU) keep up the pressure on universities to sort the row over changes to their pensions. The union’s higher education committee (HEC) met today (Thursday) and sanctioned another 14 days of strikes, if necessary, designed to hit the exam and assessment periods between April and June. UCU said it would now gather information on when the 14 days of action would be…

On 28th October, Bangor University’s Women’s Handball Team played their first match in this year’s Nationals competition, at Northgate Arena in Chester. Unfortunately, they lost of 33-8 to Leeds Beckett who fielded a very strong and experienced team, but the score in no way reflected the team spirit and dedication of the ten girls who traveled with Bangor. With Leeds having several players who have trained at GB level, and one who plays for the Super 8 league – the highest level of club Handball in England – Bangor were up against one of the toughest opponents in their group.…
A team of 30 enthusiastic international students from Bangor University got together on Saturday November 4th to work for a better and cleaner planet! They spent 3 hours picking up (a lot of) litter around upper and lower Bangor as part of a new project organised by the International Student Support Office – called Internationals Go Green. The initiative consists of a series of trips and events aimed at raising awareness on environmental issues, sustainability and wellbeing among students. In addition, all their events are organised together with other University Departments (with UNDEB Bangor this time) and Local Organisations to enhance…
Thirteen former students visited the newly renovated St Mary’s residential village recently. As well as a well-enjoyed trip down memory lane, they were delighted by the way the site had recently been developed by the University. The group of friends were all former students of St Mary’s College which was a Teacher Training College that later became part of Bangor University. The group meet annually, and this year, decided to visit Bangor to mark 60 years since they first stayed at St Mary’s. The group were welcomed on site by Ken Griffith, Head of Residence and Deirdre McIntyre Residential…
Bangor University has received a resounding testimony from last years graduating students after being placed eighth in the UK and second in Wales following the results of this year’s National Student Survey. The NSS, taken by half a million graduating students across the United Kingdom, featured 460 academic institutions, eight of which are in Wales. Bangor students have launched a petition in attempt to save the Nightline support service which was closed at the end of June following a recommendation from a former Saab officer within the Student Union. In a recently released statement, Undeb said: “In June 2017 the Undeb Bangor Trustee Board took the difficult decision to permanently close Bangor Nightline following reports of concerning behaviour by it’s committee and the way that it was being run.” Bangor Nightline has been in place for over forty years as a form of anonymous support for students at the University. Operating via volunteers, the service…
Bangor University is the 3rd best university in the country according to the WhatUni results which were announced in London this week. Hosted by David Mitchell, the awards are special in that they are only voted for by students; people who have a genuine first-hand experience in using the nominated institutions and services. In addition to picking up ‘bronze’ in the best University category, Bangor took ‘gold’ for its clubs and societies as well as further ‘bronze’ placings in the Courses and Lecturers and Giving Back categories. The University was also placed in the top ten of all the categories…
A new display has recently gone on display in the foyer of Storiel. She said: ‘It’s been a great opportunity to help educate people on…

The first result to be announced was the UCMB President for which Mirain Roberts was elected, her being the sole runner. She said: ‘ It’s great to take over from Ifan James who has done a great job. We’ve got a great team in place for next year.’ The second result of the night was the VP for Education for which Helen Marchant had been seeking a second term. Managing a huge 1080 votes in the first round,…
An online petition has been launched to prevent the deportation of a promising Bangor University student who is just months from completing her undergraduate degree. Shiromini Satkunarajah, 20, is on course for a first in Electronic Engineering and just months away from taking her final exams yet, following a refusal for asylum, she is set to be deported back to Sri Lanka despite living in the UK for the past 8 years. Plaid Cymru Member of Parliament for Arfon, Hywel Williams has released a statement condemning the Home Office’s decision to deport Shiromini. He said: “Sri Lanka is still a…
I was first introduced to MyFitnessPal a year ago and it’s an app I keep going back to time and time again. At first glance, the basic function of MyFitnessPal is as a calorie counter. The database has every food and every brand you can think of. You can either enter it into the search box or, as I prefer, you can simply scan the barcode using your smartphone camera. While this is its main selling point, under the hood it is so much more than just a way to keep track of your calorie intake. You can input your…
Being born in the early part of the eighties, the nineties are an extremely special decade for me. It was my era, the decade I became a teenager and came perilously close to my twenties. Certain things from that final decade of the millennium always conjure up special memories for me. The music, the technology, the movies but, above all, the television. It was the decade in which we met and fell in love with six coffee shop loving friends from New York. Joey, Ross, Chandler, Monica, Phoebe and Rachel all became fixtures in our lives as we followed their…
When I was growing up in the nineties, one of the staple Saturday night television shows was Blind Date hosted by the irritating yet brilliant Cilla Black. The show itself was unbelievably trashy, yet it remains ingrained in the heads of all who grew up watching it as a nostalgic view of what Saturday nights used to be like. Blind Date, like its modern day equivalent Take Me Out, became an addiction. This addiction is something that dating shows in general seem to have, no matter how trashy they may be. Take Me Out is truly one of the shallowest…

Simply dab foundation on your lips to neutralize the natural red tone before applying your lipstick. Choose a shade with peach undertones and stay away from the gray ones. Second seasons can be tricky things to get right. Many great shows in the past have struggled with second seasons such as Lost, Heroes and the more recently panned True Detective. It’s as though the writers get too comfortable following a monumentally successful first season. Fargo is an example of what can go right in a second season if you don’t rest on your laurels! Fargo is another of the breed of anthology shows which includes American Horror Story and True Detective yet there is still an element of continuation. Season 2 is set in the same universe but acts…
