The Wylfa nuclear power station on Anglesey will close down one of its reactors later this month. Officials said Reactor 2, which began operating in 1971, would stop producing electricity on 30 April because of limited fuel stocks and the remaining Reactor 1 is allowed to operate until 2014. Last month both E.ON and RWE nPower made the decision to not go ahead with Wylfa B, intended to operate from 2025, after a strategic review. This has left the Government in a serious dilemma but it insists that it will continue with the replacement of nuclear power stations even after…

One quick point, congratulations to Martin Ellis Parry for the preparation and event management work that went into making this debate possible. Martin Johnson has resigned as Coach of the English Rugby team after three-and-a-half years in the role. He had no coaching experience yet Johnson was appointed team manager of the national England Rugby Union side in April 2008 which may lead to some questions of why Johnson was picked to coach when he had no experience in that field and others had. Johnson’s decision follows a miserable World Cup which ended in quarter-final defeat by France and also featured a series of off-field controversies which marred his career and will add to the idea that there will be no Johnson…

Section 1 of the Prevention of Terrorism Act 2005 allows the Home Secretary to impose any obligation that he, or a Court, “considers necessary for purposes connected with preventing or restricting involvement by that individual in terrorism related activity.” In practice the restrictions can be almost unlimited and allow for a suspect to be under house arrest. These Control Orders can last for a maximum of 12 months but can be renewed. Control Orders do require permission from the High Court, so in a sense the Home Secretary does need some permission before the control order is imposed, except where…

On BBC Children in Need night we were treated to a special preview clip of ‘The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe’. The trailer looked brilliant! They’ll be four special guests: Claire Skinner, Bill Bailey, Arabella Weir and Alexander Armstrong. Alexander is best known for his role as Mr Smith in the Sarah Jane Adventures. The trailer showed Doctor Who arguably at its best; featuring plenty of twists and turns. It’s hard to say at the moment definitively what this episode will be like. My guesses are based on the fact that Steven Moffat is writing, which means that it…
